Activities

Planning a Journey

When you have finished this section of work, you will have shown that you can plan a journey using public transport.

To do this you must:-

1. read a bus or train timetable
2. work out which bus or train to catch

Guidance

You will have to read a bus or train timetable and work out the best one to catch to get to wherever you want to go at a particular time.

You will only have to read timetables that use the 12-hour clock.

Making a Telephone Call

When you have finished this section of work, you will have shown that you can make a telephone call, can listen to the person you are calling, can speak appropriately to the person you are calling.

To do this you must:-

1. make a telephone call to an appropriate person for a reason
2. check that you are speaking to the person you want to call
3. say why you are calling
4. listen to what the other person says
5. speak appropriately to the person
6. either get the information you called to find out or give the information you called to give
7. end the call appropriately

Guidance

When you make your telephone call, you will have to ask for the person you want to speak to, say who you are and why you are calling.

You will need to listen carefully to the other person and speak clearly.

You will have to find out the information you called for or give the information you called to say.

You must finish the call politely.

Evidence

Make a tape recording of the conversation for your portfolio or get someone to listen to your phone call.

Shopping

When you have finished this section of work, you will have shown that you can plan your shopping, can go to an appropriate shop to buy what you need, can choose and pay for the things you want to buy.

To do this you must:-

1. prepare a shopping list
2. go to an appropriate shop
3. pick the things on your shopping list
4. pay for your shopping
5. check the change that you have been given, if appropriate

Guidance

You will have to think about what you want to buy and write a shopping list.
You should have at least three things on your list.
You will have to decide which shop or shops you will buy your shopping from.
You will have to go to the shop or shops with your tutor or supervisor or another person they suggest.
You will have to pick out the things you want to buy and pay for them.
You must give the shop assistant enough money to pay for your shopping. If you give the shop assistant more money than your shopping costs, you must check your change is correct and tell the shop assistant if it is wrong.

Evidence
