Activities

Types of Business Ownership

(Note to tutor/supervisor - It is recommended that students completing this unit should be on a Business Studies related course.)

When you have finished this section of work, you will have shown that you know the main types of business ownership and can identify types of business ownership.

To do this you must:

1. name the main types of business ownership.
2. explain what each type is.
3. give examples of different types of business ownership in your area.
4. give examples of each type of business nationally.

Guidance

You will need to know at least six main types of business ownership and explain what each type does.

You will need to find at least four businesses in your area, say which types they are and explain to your tutor or supervisor whether they operate locally or as part of a national chain.

You will also have to find out the name of a national company for each type of business ownership.

Evidence

The evidence you produce can include:

1. a list of main types of business ownership with at least two sentences describing what each does:

3. a statement from your tutor or supervisor that you know which businesses in your area operate locally or as part of a national chain. Keep the statement in your portfolio.


Working in an Office

(Note to tutor/supervisor: Students should gather evidence for this section either from their work experience in an office situation or from someone they know who is working in an office.)

When you have finished this section of work, you will have shown that you know what type of business you work in, what job you are required to do, what equipment you need to do your job and understand what you have to do in order to work safely in the job you are doing.

To do this you must:

1. name the type of business you work in.
2. describe the tasks you do in your job.
3. list the main equipment you use and what you use it for.
4. work safely.

Guidance

You will need to explain what type of business you work in and whether it belongs to a local or national chain. You must know what product or service the business provides.

You must explain the tasks that you carry out at work and the main equipment you use when carrying out these tasks.

You must complete the Health and Safety at Work assignment and apply what you have learned while on your work experience. If you are not in a place of work you must ask someone that you know, who is working, the Health and Safety Rules that apply to their job.

Evidence

The evidence you produce can include:

1. a written note of what type of business you are working in, whether it provides a service or product and whether it belongs to a local or national chain:

3. labelled pictures or drawings of the equipment you use while doing your job with a short explanation of what each is for.
4. the completed unit Health and Safety at Work.


Using Office Equipment

When you have finished this section of work, you will have shown that you can carry out tasks appropriately using equipment and know how to care for office equipment.

To do this you must:

1. use office equipment for given tasks.
2. take care of the equipment you use.

Guidance

The equipment should be that which you need for the tasks required for your job, e.g. a hole punch, for storing documents into a ring binder, a stapler for fastening paper together, a fax machine for sending an urgent message, a computer for word processing a document, a photocopier for producing a number of copies of a document, etc.

You must know how to look after the equipment you use.

You must know how to keep it clean, switch it off correctly after use, and put it away in the correct place so that it is ready for use by others.

Evidence

The evidence you produce can include:

1. a statement from your tutor or supervisor that you have completed four different tasks each using a different piece of equipment or the completed tasks with a note saying what the task was and what equipment you used. (Enter it in the box below.)
